FAMAGUSTA AREA STUDY (FAS) IS CONCLUDED

The research project titled "Measuring the Quality of Urban Life in Gazimağusa (Famagusta)" - Famagusta Area Study (FAS) - carried out under the auspices of the URDC was completed in December 2008. The Final Report of the project (including data analyses on a wide range of urban issues) prepared by Dr. Derya Oktay and submitted to TUBITAK is still under expert evaluation. The main findings of this comprehensive study will be announced to the public (through press organs) following the final approval.

The inital findings of the Famagusta Area Study have already been presented at several international conferences (EDRA 39, Veracruz, 2007; IAPS 39, Rome, 2008), and two more presentations will be done on different aspects of the research at the City Futures Conference, Madrid, 2009, and at the Joint International Symposium of IAPS-CSBE & Housing Networks, Istanbul, 2009.  Further, publication of an article in an international journal and a chapter in an internationally refereed book (by Springer, Netherlands) are due in 2009-2010 period.

Robert W. Marans, Research Professor, Institute for Social Research & Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, was the guest of the Urban Research & Development Centre on 15-18 April.

Professor Marans, as the advisor, worked with Dr. Derya Oktay on the ongoing research project of the URDC (Measuring the Urban Quality of Life in Famagusta) and gave a lecture titled "Understanding People in Planning for Energy Reduction in Buildings: A Case Study on the Behavioral Aspects of Energy Conservation at the University of Michigan" on 18 April.
