The International Day for Monuments and Sites is celebrated every year around the world on April 18, under the leadership of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) organization, in order to raise awareness about the protection of cultural assets and to contribute to the creation / raising of public awareness. The theme for 2021 has been set up as 'Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures' and for strengthening ICOMOS' actions to link heritage as driver of achieving sustainable development, organizers are also requested to refer to relevant SDGs (SDGs 5, 10, 11,15, 16) in 'The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development', adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, to support the messages to be shared in these discussions.

With this event, organized in cooperation with EMU-URDC and MASDER, it is aimed to raise the awareness on values of a very special historic city, Famagusta, and the importance of preserving these values. "The problems in Walled City of Famagusta will be put forward, brought to the agenda and discussed", and this activity will be done for the attainment of a more sustainable historical city and a sustainable community within the scope of the UN's 'Sustainable Cities and Communities' (SDG11) goal.

In this context, a selection of photographs will be shared with the public digitally via social media and at an exhibition to be opened at 10:00 on Saturday, April 17, 2021 in the garden of MASDER Building. On the same day at 12:00, a round table discussion will be held by EMU-URDC Board Member and EMU Department of Architecture faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ege Uluca Tümer, Famagusta Walled City and its historical context will be interpreted through the photographs exhibited. Everybody, who are concerned with the historical environment, are kindly invited to the event, which will be held in the garden of MASDER's building located in the Walled City, under suitable conditions for pandemic.
