Celebrating Public Space on the Occasion of World Cities Day
Published Date: Monday, 31 October 2022

World Cities Day is the last day of Urban October on the 31st October each year and was first celebrated in 2014. Aglobal observance is held in a different city each year, and the day focuses on a specific theme, just like World Habitat Day.

This year's global observance is planned in Shanghai, China, under the theme Act Local to Go Global. The intention is to bring different partners and diverse stakeholders together to share their experiences and approaches to the local action, what local action worked and what is needed to empower local and regional governments to create a greener, more equitable, and sustainable cities.

As has been stated in the concept note of this year's World Cities Day, “local action is critical to achieving sustainable development goals by 2030. UN-Habitat has been at the forefront of SDG localization since the endorsement of the Agenda 2030. Since then, UN-Habitat has been working to advance SDG lo- localization by providing technical expertise to partners across the globe, leading the development of cutting-edge research, capacitating local and regional governments on SDG localization, and strengthening the voice of local governments and local actors within the leading international and UN-led fora on SDGs."

This year, EMU URDC and City Space Architecture are organizing a webinar to celebrate World Cities Day as a part of their ongoing series to celebrate public spaces.

Please join us on 31st October 2022 for Act(ing) Local to go Global!
